Michael G. Callas Memorial New Educator's Reception

The New Educator’s Reception is the only fully sponsored event that GHC holds annually. This event involves a luncheon and community information sharing session held in conjunction with the Washington County Public Schools New Teacher Training Academy. The reception provides an opportunity for the business community to say “Thank you” to those who are shaping the minds and future of our children in the classroom. The reception invites all newly hired educators within the public school system, private schools and the higher education facilities (Hagerstown Community College, Kaplan University & University System of Maryland at Hagerstown).

During the mid 90’s, GHC found that many of the newly hired educators were coming to the community just days prior to beginning work with little knowledge of the amenities, real estate, or services available to them. The New Educator’s Reception was created to help new teachers integrate into our community by connecting them to various community services they will need or use personally or professionally (banks, housing, communications, continuing education, tourism, social service agencies, etc.). Vendors are invited to set up booths to provide information to the educators about the services they provide in Washington County. In addition to the vendors, the new teachers get a chance to interact with members of the business community as well as various dignitaries invited to attend each year.

In 2004 the Reception was officially named The Michael G. Callas Memorial New Educator’s Reception to honor the passing of one of Washington County’s biggest education supporters. Each year the reception is held at a one of the high schools in Washington County in August before school starts for students.
