WORKFORCE READINESS / EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

Michael G. Callas New Educator’s Reception - Host this annual event in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and the Washington County Public School System to help new teachers acclimate to our community

Opportunity Youth Initiatives - Continue research on and how to get our 16-24 year-old youth who are unemployed, not in school, or not in post-secondary education gainfully employed and engaged in our community

GHC Education Forum – Continue to facilitate a monthly roundtable with the top officials of our educational institutions in the community to discuss educational and workforce issues. Work on expansion of a Washington Co. Promise Program” guaranteeing all county graduates free tuition at Hagerstown Community College (HCC); Provide support letters for various educational grant applications in the community. Research initiatives to break down barriers to post-secondary success

Support HCC President Dr. Jim Klauber’s initiative to have Washington County certified as a WorkKeys community, the first in the state of Maryland

Continue to support USMH and their expansion of new programs in hospitality, healthcare, and STEM as well as new facility expansion

Support OnTrack, a workforce development collaborative started by GHC in 2015, to foster collaboration on events, projects and initiatives that support college and career readiness. OnTrack now operates independently under its own Executive Director

COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE

Regularly monitor activities at our airport to ensure growth and expansion of this critical economic development area

Continue to monitor any developments concerning the new stadium being built, and the Atlantic League baseball team coming to our community

Continued support of Williamsport in their efforts to make C&O Canal Improvements and trail improvements.

Assist our county in building major transportation connections to economic development areas including Eastern Blvd, Professional Blvd, Crayton Blvd, Halfway Blvd, and Col. Henry K. Douglas Drive, and the I-70/MD 65 Interchange.

Continue to support efforts to widen I-81 to the Pennsylvania line

VITALITY IN CITY CENTERS

Support the growth of more events and festivals in downtown Hagerstown – WindDown, Augustoberfest, MD Theatre, and the replacement of Bluesfest, etc.

Support Hagerstown Mainstreet Program to revitalize our city center

Support efforts to connect and expand tourism assets (sports tourism, cultural tourism, eco-tourism, agri-tourism)

Help community leaders determine the best vehicle by which to support a Hagerstown City-Center focused development authority for purposes of downtown revitalization – residential and commercial

Continue to support the County’s Urban Improvement Project benefiting the MD Theatre, BISFA, USMH, and downtown revitalization.
